understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Two years running we met some people we knew from London at a rest station on the French autoroute whilst going to/from our respective skiing holidays. Both families live in London. Saturday Feb 1/2 term 2013 South of Reims going South - We stopped for fuel and saw a family we knew who had also stopped for fuel. We regarded this as unlikely but possible as the stop is usually very busy with English cars going South. Sunday Feb 1/2 term 2014 North of Reims going North - We stopped for a 'comfort break' and as we walked out to return to our car we saw the same family from last year. We didn't need to stop as we had stopped for fuel immediately prior but the children had misbehaved so we stopped again to allow them to demonstrate they knew how to behave. The other family had stopped because there car had just put up a warning light rather than stopping for fuel. This was much more a surprise as the stop was (a) on the way home and therefore the chances of meeting were more remote as the 'mass' of cars had already gone, (b) optional and therefore much less likely to occur than a required stop. Given both familes ski there was obviously a likelihood of meeting during this week but we were going to/from a French resort whereas the people we knew were going to/from Switzerland. I struggle to put a degree of concidence on this as I recognise it could occur once so therefore happening twice is possible but much more unlikely.
