Are They Really Coincidences ?
As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
My mother never believed in coincidence and often talked about these things that others referred to as coincidence as just normal life but sadly I did not really take much notice until recent years, as I've reached middle age - and thought more about the meaning of life etc. as I suppose one does at this time. Now that I am aware of what I call 'happenings' (as I am firmly in the 'no-coincidence' camp) they occur all the time and I will give a few examples now and then update from time to time if that's ok ?
One happening that springs to mind immediately is the fact that whenever I go away on holiday I always meet someone I know, whether it is here in the UK or further afield - recent examples are this in Cornwall I saw on old friend who lives in a nearby village in Looe one morning plus my girlfriend's friend staying across the way from us -- last year I spotted one of my youngest son's teachers on the plane coming back from Tunisia - oh yes and earlier this year on the way to Spain I saw a neighbour at Southend Airport.
I live in fairly large town but most days while driving or cycling around I will see the same silver Mercedes car driving around (it has a distinctive number plate so easy to spot) - in a typical week, I will see it 5 days out of 7 and sometimes two or three times in a day. This car does not reside in my immediate area, and I have never seen it parked on a driveway anywhere close to where I live.
I have not used a alarm clock since I had a paper round 40 years ago and whatever time I wake up I can guess the time within 10 minutes and on days where I have to wake up at a certain time, I can do that easily without the use of an alarm - probably not what you would call 'coincidence' but still a bit weird ?
Getting back to work but will post again with more thoughts
