understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I took a ferry from Kos to Patmos and was chatting on the boat to a woman who happened to be sitting next to me ( we were not with the same holiday company and had not met previously). We talked of this and that and the holiday in general and she asked if I'd found any good shopping or bought anything. I said I had indeed bought a very nice necklace, adding "But don't tell my bank manager." (It's phrase I never, ever use and in fact, as I said it, I wondered why on earth I'd said that of a £40 necklace.) As we continued to chat we got on to the subject of where we lived in England and what we did for a living. She WAS my bank manager.
