understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In March 2007 I went on my first skiing holiday with my husband and son. We stayed in a catered chalet in Meribel. Amongst the guests was an airline pilot in his late 50's who was holidaying on his own. We chatted over dinner a few times and said goodbye at the end of the week. Two years later, in December 2009, my husband, son and myself were with friends on a skiing holiday in Valmorel in France. We had flown into Chambery and enjoyed a week's holiday on the slopes. On our return journey, we travelled to Chambery and after a two hour wait, were told that due to weather conditions, we would have to be bussed to Lyon and fly from there instead. We arrived in Lyon airport and whilst waiting for our flight to be called, I was chatting with my female friend about my first skiing holiday and the nice Pilot who had graced our dinner table in the chalet in Meribel two years before. At the same time that I mentioned his name, someone tripped over my son's suitcase and when I turned to apologise, it was that same Pilot!! Now that is a coincidence! Another time, I was in London on a day-trip with my step-daughter and her friend. We were waiting to board a boat for a Thames trip and I suddenly thought about a guy that I used to be attracted to, the attraction was mutual but we never managed to get together as one or the other of us was always 'with' someone else. Anyway, the boat became full and my step-daughter, her friend and I were at the front of the queue for the next trip. As I looked at the passengers on the full boat, there was the guy that had crossed my mind. I was really astonished as I had not thought about or seen him for a number of years; then the Captain decided that there was room for my party and on we got only to sit behind he and his girlfriend. Well, after the initial shock had worn off and introductions made, it transpired that I dealt on a daily basis with the girlfriend's brother-in-law via work. Work for me was in Worcestershire, her brother-in-law lived in Brighton and the guy and the girlfriend lived somewhere (it escapes me where) else entirely and were on a day trip to London themselves!! Lastly, approx 20 years ago, I was on holiday in Los Angeles with my sister, niece and nephew, and we decided upon a few days in Las Vegas. Whilst there we took a day trip via a small 6 seater aeroplane to the Grand Canyon and whilst wondering about on the Canyon were approached by 3 young Japanese tourists who gestured for us to take their photo on the ridge of the Canyon. They spoke no English and we spoke no Japanese but lots of laughs were exchanged over the steep fall and their craziness at going so close to the edge (we were on the un-touristy side of the Canyon with no rails!!). Three days later, having flown back to LA and on a visit to down town Hollywood, we were leaving a cafe after a caffeine fix when we heard shouts and whistling; when we looked across the road, there were the same three Japanese tourists waving to us! Again, lots of grinning and hand shaking before we went off on our merry way talking about coincidences!!
