understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

On a flight from Hong Kong to Kula Lumpur in 2001, I exchanged a few pleasantries with the chap next to me. But since he had a thick book open I did not chat with him until the meal. When we talked, we hit it off. It turned out he was on his way to Myranmar to work on a mine and to my surprise he was from my hometown, Vancouver, Canada. Small world? It gets better. I gave him my business card and his eyes lit up. "This is absolutely incredible," he said. "I've just read about you in this book. Would please sign your name in the margin on page 555," he implored me. Startled, I looked, and it was "The Titans" by Canadian business historian Peter C Newman. I was at once somewhat embarrassed but pleased to sign his book...what was truly amazing was that I get only 7 lines in a 900 page book and he had just read them five minutes before we chatted.
