As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

A room with a view

Today I was going through the paper cropping articles as I do daily. There was a feature on an owl which the paper had captioned "Woo's on my head?" as the owl was atop someone's head. I posted this on social media and titled it "A woo-m with a view" adding my own pun to the owl's supposed hoot. Further on in the paper, I found there was a piece on a Hyundai car, powered by Hydrogen whose exhaust is clean water, that you can make a cup of tea with, thus the chosen caption which read "A vroom with a brew"!

Rugby Reunion

On a skiing trip to the French Alps a couple of years ago, a conversation developed over coffee about rugby - two of our group had played in the first XI for our school team, some 30 years ago. One had played at hooker, the other had played prop. This prompted me to ask - 'who was the third player in that front row?' The answer came back - it was Jason. At that precise moment (exactly), as if by magic, the aforementioned Jason walked onto the terrace of the cafe at which we were having coffee, half-way down a blue run down to the ski resort we were staying at. Jaws dropped. Gasps of incredulity. The chances of someone of similar background, being at a French ski resort during February are perhaps not that slim. But the chances of this person appearing precisely at moment they have been brought up in conversation seems vanishingly small.

A Kiss Premonition and The Man On the Bus

When I was in high school, I was in a long-term relationship with a young man (who later became my husband), when he decided to attend the United States Military Academy. Friends and family felt the need to warn me that the military would "change" him -- that he would lose his personality. That he would become cold and distant. Fortunately, this did not happen and my humorous, warm and demonstrative husband remained so. However, these assumptions of those around us became a running joke between the two of us and he would always pretend to stiffen up when I kissed him. Perhaps it was because of this that I began having recurring dreams (nightmares, actually) of my attempting to communicate, embrace and kiss him only to be met with a catatonic lack of response. I began having the dream frequently and they lasted for years. In every dream, I was sobbing uncontrollably while he remained lifeless and unmoved by my grief. Fast forward to several years later -- my husband was killed in an automobile accident.

Facebook Faux Pas

I was on Facebook today and was scrolling down my feed and noticed a video stating that yesterday was 'National Debbie Day'. I decided to share with a former coworker whom is a Facebook friend. I rarely communicate with her but always thought she was a nice person. Thinking I was making a nice gesture, I wrote "Sorry, a day late, but never too late to celebrate!" As I was posting my message it occurred to me that her husband had passed away last winter and she might be mourning a death anniversary and not be in the mood to receive such a message. However, I did not anticipate that her husband had passed away exactly a year and a day ago. As I scrolled down my Facebook feed the very next post was one she had posted yesterday saying that she felt shattered by the loss of her husband; her best friend who had passed away on that day. I quickly deleted my post...certainly she would not be in the mood to celebrate. I wonder if some Facebook algorithm was involved with the proximity of 'The National Debbie Day post and her own post. I also haven't had much contact with Debbie and the last thing I remember was reading about her husband passing away.

someone wanted books

I work at a used bookstore. I often bring old books home to check value and then return them to the store. I have had one bag of books at my house for several months from the shop. A couple of days ago, I put them in my car. Today (first day working after putting them in the car) a woman came in looking for the exact type books I had in my car. These were old school reading books from around 1950. She was so thrilled and bought several. I don't remember anyone coming in and asking about old school readers before today.

A French Connection ?

Back in 2013, my wife and I took an adventure cruise from Ushuaia Argentina, the most southern city in the world. We spent 5 days travelling round Cape Horn and up through the Chilean ice fields and Glacier Ally in Patagonia. Our 120 fellow passengers were from around the world, and our dining table included couples from Holland, Russia, France, Germany and ourselves from the UK. We ate all our meals and celebrated New Year together before bidding farewell on the quayside in Punta Arenas. 18 months later, my wife and I were on a self drive touring holiday in Oman, and decided to visit the weekly livestock auction (camels, goats etc) in the local town of Nizwa. After the auction we entered the local souk to take some photos of the traditional market traders. Walking round, my wife suddenly said ‘Do you think that girl in front looks familiar?’ I followed for a few yards when the girl in question turned round, looked at me and then turned back and continued. It was then that she stopped abruptly and turned around again. To both our surprise, it was the same French girl from the cruise! A second later, her partner appeared from around the corner.

Words

On my way towards work, when I saw a stray dog lying beside the road, I was comparing availablity of first-aid between humans and other animals in my mind.Thought of paramedics came up. The name of Jyoti Singh, the victim of heinous Delhi gang rape came up, as she was a paramedical student. The same day in the evening , I went to a nearby internet cafe to download some official documents. The operator was opening a tab of government website for another customer. On the computer screen a notification of Paramedical test result came up. Surprised was I!
A couple of days later a friend of mine said that the tree in my WhatsApp status resembles with the tree portrayed in the film Shawshank's Redemption. The next night a friend was narrating the activities he has done for that day. He said he saw a film with a common friend of us. The name of the film being : Shawshank's Redemption. He shared his experience. He was reading an article about Tokiyo online. In the mean time an 60's Hindi film song that bears the word Tokiyo was playing.
Since then I am a bit intrigued about coincidence.

life,love,death and birth.

in 1997, i met a woman in London,A few months later, her father, who was living on another continent then died of a stroke after he was in a coma for a few weeks.During his stroke his wife asked him how old he was, he told her he was 28, That was my age at the time, He later died on the same day as my birthday. 9 months later our first son was born on the same day, same time including the time difference of the continents as her youngest brother. i often wondered why these events in our lives were synchronous with dates and times?

I guessed her name

In secondary school about a quarter of the way into year 10, I gained this new English teacher, who became one of my favourite teachers. In the secondary school that i went to we would address our teachers by their surnames and weren't really allowed to know their first names. As i began to get to know her, her personality reminded me of this great youth leader that I once had, called Lauren. Therefore, I was going to ask her whether she knew anyone called Lauren (because they might have been related) but didn't get around to doing so. A few months later she went onto her email, on the teachers computer. Teachers wouldn't purposely have their emails projected onto the classroom board, but i'm guessing that she didn't realize, that the computer screen was projected onto the board. Anyways, she only had her email showing for a minute and I just happened to look up to the board for a second, and when i did the first thing i looked at was her name. To my suprise her name is Lauren!

Providence?

In 1979 I met a guy in college in Los Angeles. We dated and fell in love. He was in NROTC, and 6 months before he was to leave for parts unknown with the Navy, he broke up with me, 1981. I was the right girl at the wrong time. Five years later he married, and I married a year after that. Fast forward to 2001, I discovered online that we both lived in Virginia, about 30 minutes from one another. His wife and I have the same name and are both born in the same month, (9 days apart) although one year apart. My husband and my former boyfriend both have birthdays in February, with dates that are 3 days apart. I live in a subdivision that has my former boyfriend's name in it, as do several other subdivisions nearby. We have emailed recently (2017) and have discovered we both have always loved one another all these years.
