Cambridge Coincidences Collection

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

444

Often I will be doing something, email messages. Or reading a book. Something will happen. I'm redirected. Something redirects me and when I get redirected via websites. or books or other things I end up seeing 444. Not always but often enough. It's difficult to explain but it happens alot. This is part of the angel numbers. Angel Number 444 is a message that you have nothing to fear in regards to your life, work and Divine life purpose. (not that it matters to your study but years ago at the age of 20 I astral projected, I've only once accomplished astral projection. So for me I think it's more than ego for coincidences. I feel something we don't understand or can't measure mathematically, or scientifically is at work. Think about it. Donald Trump is president. Must be a reason behind that... that's a joke.

Giraffe

I was driving and thinking I would like a Giraffe statue. My sister has a very tall one in her place. I had just dropped my dog off and that's why it was no my mind. I drove to my storage to get some of my things to bring to my place. A guy was selling some things on the side of the road. He had a Giraffe so I bought it.

First Love Last Love

I attended a funeral for a friend recently. Unfortunately due to reasons unknown to me the family did not allow someone to attend that had pretty much spent 20 plus years with in in an on, off again relationship. I left the funeral and went to a thrift store after. it's the way I deal with my emotions. It was a hot day and no reason to do this but I went over the coat rack and started browsing the coats. I picked out this coat that looked nice. I pulled it off the hanger. Inside the coat the label said, O'Neill. Now the person who the family left out has the last name O'Neil. It's pretty close to the label. Behind the label on the inside of the jacket it said, First love, Last love. I took a photo to sent to my friend. I do believe He loved her dearly and this was his way of reaching out to let her know, not to worry about the family. It's minuscule in the bigger picture as he loved her.

333 Angel Numbers

For the longest time my alarm clock, digital alarm clock. I would wake up at 3:33 am in the morning. Not every morning but often enough. I love horror movies so I just turn the clock around as it was freaking me out. Than one night I could not sleep and I decided to get up and type it in the computer. I typed in 333 repeat numbers and the angel forums and mathematical sites came up. It as a time in my life when I needed support as I was going through hardship. You are guided surrounded by and loved by ascended masters. Is what it said.

Baby Food Jars

I was walking in Shoppers Drug mart from the pharmacy with a bottle of pills to commit suicide. My life was horrible and the thoughts grand. When I was walking down the ill way something fell off the self. A few things. I bent down to pick them up. 3 bottles of baby food. Peaches baby food. I laughed because just prior to my fathers death, I attempted to feed him peaches baby food. He didn't like peaches. I decided to get help and it was Yes shitty thoughts but also a hormonal imbalance.. !

Joker

I had lip injections done at a plastic surgeon. This was the second time. My nephew commented by saying make sure he doesn't make you look like the joker this time. I told the plastic surgeon about it. After I left the office I was driving my car and a vehicle passed me and the license plate was, Joker. I laughed. I see them more than as mathematical probabilities. Personally, ego driven as you say, Maybe, I see them as something else, not sure how to define it. They have a sense of humour.

Midwife!

Around Christmas 2011 we received a piece of mis-delivered post, an NHS registration card for a new baby born by the name of Martha, who lived across the other side of the city in a similarly named street. A few days later, the local midwife knocked at the door, also looking for baby Martha. She was very surprised to see me and told me she had been thinking about me just that day. She said she had attended a young woman who had just given birth and the new grandmother showed the midwife a photograph of the three of them when the young mother herself had just been born. The photograph was taken in my house, in my now bedroom. Three days later I found I was pregnant and had to ask the midwife to come back!

The white owl

I have experienced many coincidences in life and have always found them to be quite remarkable. One morning, while driving to work, I decided to take note of any coincidence that might occur. Nothing strange happened at work but while driving home I decided to listen to some music. I was talking earlier that day with a coworker about concerts that I’d been to while going through a heavy metal phase. The last one that I’d gone to featured the deftones. I decided to see what they were up to and searched for some new music by the group. The album diamond eyes popped up on the screen and its cover was the picture of a white owl. It made an impression on me, I remembered my coincidence project and suspected that it was worth noting. When I got home I picked up a book that’d been sitting on an end table for a few months, basically as decoration. I bought it at a used book store and pretty much just left it there. It was of particular interest to me on that day because of my search for meaningful coincidences. The book was Nausea by Sartre. In the book, the first dated page of the narrator’s diary happened to be Monday, January 29 1932.

same address

Bought tickets for York Art Gallery, agreed to gift aid, so gave post code. The woman said, that's familiar. She used to live next door, in Bridge of Allan, central Scotland.

Pennies from Dad

My father died in 2011, at the age of 99. Daddy was always one of those guys who saved his pennies. I had occasionally found pennies on the ground when I was out and about, but after my dad passed away, it seemed as though the number I was finding increased. I began finding them almost every day. When one or two days would go by without my finding one, I would then find a Nicole, dime, or quarter instead. One day I jokingly picked one up and said aloud, “Thanks, Daddy”. My son was with me and asked what I was doing so I told him about finding all of the pennies and other change. It became a running joke between my son and I that my dad was leaving the pennies.<br /> In the spring of 2017, my son took a job Working at Six Flags Over Texas on the railroad. Six Flags is a theme park and operates antique steam locomotives as one of the rides. Some days, Rowan would be working as a Conductor on the train and, as a part of his duties, would be responsible for cleaning the coaches between runs. Every few days he would come home and hand me a penny or two and remark “ Grandaddy must have been on the train again”. We would laugh and I would toss the coins into my bank.
