understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

IVAN

On holiday in Gran Canaria, in a restaurant I told my partner about a surprise I had planned for her father's imminent 80th birthday. I said that just before leaving Ireland two days earlier I had sent an e-mail to an Irish newsreader whom her father liked and had asked her for an autographed photograph. Literally within seconds of me telling her, the newsreader walked into the restaurant......

An unlikely meeting

We lived on a boat in Kalamata in the southern Peloponnese in 1992. We made many friends there especially with English speaking migrants one being Andrew who was a South African who was enjoying retirement in a motor home based on an old military vehicle. We were amused by the way we would often meet him and his wife by accident when we shopped in Kalamata. Another friend, Tony needed a lift to the Island of Rhodes and after delivering him to the island by crossing the Aegean sea we decided to visit Turkey and made landfall at a small town called Datca at the end of a 100 mile long peninsula on the southern coast. We visited the small town and ended in a carpet shop. I was sitting in the corner of the room drinking apple tea. The door was diagonally across from me. Because of the angle I could see the street outside through a slit only about three or four inches wide. Traffic was slow outside. It stopped and I saw a small portion of edge of the bodywork of a van. I recognized it immediately and strode across the room and stood in the middle of the road in front of my friends' van with arms wide and a loud 'Hello'.

Meeting a stranger twice in unlikely circumstances.

About twelve years ago my Mother was a resident in an old people's home in Cumbria. Every three months or so I would drive up there, stay with my sister and pay a couple of visits to her over a weekend. I usually returned to London on a Monday but on this particular visit I came back on a Sunday. This was a hot day in August and the traffic on the M6 and M1 was very heavy. As usual I stopped about half way down the M1, re-fuelled and had a coffee. On returning to my car, I had just put the key in the door of my car when a smart Mercedes stopped on the other side. An Italian looking man lowered his window and somewhat to my surprise asked me to post a parcel for him. I asked him why he did not do so himself. He said he was going on to Heathrow to catch a flight where there was no Post Office and he didn't have time to make other arrangements. I told him I had no intention of posting his parcel. He gave me a fairly venomous look and drove off. I tried to remember his number but failed. Two years later I had to meet an actress friend of mine who was appearing at the Aldwych in a musical. We arranged to meet in a coffee bar close to the Drury Lane theatre.

collision at Heathrow

A few years ago I arrived at Terminal 3 Heathrow from Borneo. After a reviving cup of coffee I made my way across the concourse to the Railair bus stop. I looked up to steer a course through the crowd and locked eyes with my son who was making for the railway station having just flown in from Boston USA.

PIN Number

My wife received a new PIN number for her debit card and she asked me to change it to one she would remember. When I got to the hole in the wall I peeled back the security tab only to see it was the number she wanted!

Strangely Timed Death

I attend a large state university in the U.S, and in the summer of 2011 enrolled in a political science course. The professor gave me the opportunity to assist him in a research project regarding local history and politics. While scanning through the library's online catalog of holdings in my area of interest, I came across a poverty book authored by a man with an rather uncommon last name; the same uncommon last name as a friend of mine in high school. I remembered my friend telling me that his grandfather was a retired professor of social work at my university, and I immediately realized that this book in the catalog had been written by him. Feeling that this would give my friend a kick, knowing I had coincidentally stumbled upon his grandfather's work, I sent him a message via Facebook telling him what had happened. As it turned out, he was presently mourning the death of that same grandfather, who had passed away on either the same day, or the day right before or after I had been doing the research and found the book.

Wrong Number or Was It?

About forty years ago, I was at home and dialled my friend's home phone number. She lived about a five minute walk from my house. The telephone was answered by a voice I didn't recognise so, puzzled, I asked "Can I speak to Heather please?" The person replied, "Who wants her?" "Janet" I replied. Heather came to the phone and in a puzzled voice asked "Is that you Jan? How did you know I was here? How did you get the number?" It turned out she was visiting a friend who lived in the nearby city, about 20 miles away and on a completely different telephone code. There was absolutely no explanation how I had got through to this other number. In those days there was no such thing as "divert call". I had dialled Heather's home telephone number and had no idea at all of her friend's name or telephone number though it took me some time to convince Heather, if I ever did!

Spanish Superstition II

During my retirement in Spain I was involved in a serious motor accident which left me badly incapacitated. Six months later, with hip and leg pain injury I was still obliged to use crutches and my golfing career had come to an abrupt end. One morning, sitting alone on my patio (my wife having gone to golf) I noticed an elderly couple calling house to house. My neighbours seemed to give them short shrift and eventually the couple approached me. With nothing particular to do I invited them in for coffee and a chat. They proved to be charming people and after relating their career experiences the conversation inevitably turned to religion. Despite my own disbelief we engaged in a lively discussion such that, taking his leave, the husband turned around and said "When I retire tonight I shall kneel at my bed and ask the Lord if he may relieve your burden". His wife then made a similar promise. On rising next morning, every pain in my body had gone. Where before I could scarcely stand unaided I now walked normally. My crutches were redundant. The next day I was playing golf.

Aborted Flight

In August 2011, my husband and I had flown BA from London to Singapore, en route for Brisbane where we were to spend a few days with some friends, Melodie and Eddie, who we hadn't seen for almost 20 years when they emigrated to Australia. After a few hours in transit at Singapore airport, we boarded our onward flight. Unfortunately, 45 minutes into our flight, we were told by the Captain that the plane had burst a tyre on take off and he had been told to return to Singapore. This meant a night in a Hotel and, on our return to the airport the next morning, all passengers were found seats on various other flights. My husband and I were found seats on a Singapore Airlines flight arriving in Brisbane that evening. Soon after take off, I noticed a young man across the aisle from me who appeared to be unwell. He was coughing, sneezing and looked hot and uncomfortable. After a while, I offered him some Paracetamol which he gladly accepted. I also asked the cabin staff for a cold drink and an ice pack for him.
