understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Was texting a friend last summer asking if he was coming out for a drink on Friday night. I noticed whilst texting that the word 'pint' also spelt 'shot' and 'riot' due to the nature of predictive texting. I mentioned this in my text to my friend and within five minutes my friend rang me and sounded extremely worried. He went on to explain he was currently in a hotel room in York and had met an old friend he had not seen for many years on a train the previous day. This old friend asked my friend if he had heard any good music lately. This old friend went on to explain he had recently seen an excellent band in concert. I asked my friend where this story about meeting his old friend was going. He explained that he had finally got round to watching the band on youtube at the precise moment when he recieved my text. He went on to say the name of the band was 'Pint Shot Riot' We both fell silent... What are the chances of that?
