understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Early this morning I sat in my kitchen reading Nancy Mitford's account of Captain Scott's last and fatal expedition, to the South Pole. I have very little interest in polar exploration and only read this as it is incuded in 'The Water Beetle', a collection of Mitford's writings, which I have recently acquired.
Just about half an hour ago, I learned from Radio 4's 'A Point of View' that March 2012 will be the Centenary of the expedition.
