Methodology of Presentations

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Methodology of Presentations

The Programme is aiming towards increasing the Public Understanding of Risk, which allows us to gauge and measure how this is occurring but also insists that we examine the methodology to increase the success of our appeal and efforts. We are working on a combination of resources to maximize the effort of presentations at seminars, colleges, conferences, radio and TV programmes, and various community events and meetings. These are:

• The Drupal website, Understandinguncertainty.org, will have both interactive components and still information that can be used during the presentation
• Developing league table analysis and graphics
• Gathering case studies
• Developing narratives to get the information across
• Gathering and creating exercises and games for public participation during the presentation
We are developing the presentation closely with the website content as the website will be a primary tool to disseminate information. The website also has various ways to indicate the popularity of topics and efficacy of this information on increasing the public understanding of risk.
