Website Methodology

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Methodology for Development of Website and Website Methodology for Outreach

We have held meetings with IT staff, Programme Professor, and research/project staff to develop an working concept for the website (David Spiegelhalter has developed the initial idea behind the website), based on how we will present at an upcoming event one month away. Thus, presentation methodology and website methodology is interdependent. As we find information in identified topics other ideas as to how to present are developing.
For the website understandinguncertainty.org, so far we have discussed:
• Narrative as methodology for explaining research. Forms of narrative would be personal stories, graphical branding or character development of one “mascot”.

• Graphics with explanations of the graphics, with levels that range from simplistic to increased technical understanding of mathematical concepts.

• Case studies

• Detailed descriptions of exercises and games to explain chance, probability etc.
