understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Last year my daughter was sitting on a beech in Greece when she saw a very unfamiliar breed of dog run right past her.Though the dog breed was very unusual, she recognised it immediately as a very close friend of hers in Australia also had one. This immediately made her think of her friend and so she decided to call him to say hi and mention she had seen a similar dog. Shockingly she was told that her friend had very suddenly passed away. How strange that she should inexplicably see 'his' dog run past her. What did this mean?
