Unusual encounter

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My late husband, Bill Embery, from Preston, Lancs. shared the unusual surname with his cousin, also Bill Embery. I met Bill when he came over to Redcar to work with ICI. We eventually moved to Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, where I worked in the office of a school. One of the teachers returned from a cruise holiday in which they had shared a table with Bill Embery and his wife! This same teacher had, with her Northern husband, taught in a school in Middlesbrough, where I was born and raised. Then they had both returned to her home town to work in the school which eventually employed me!
