Is this unusual?

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Coincidences happen all the time in my life - so much so that I notice if none occur for more than a ciuple of days. II now realise I should try to keep a record - but it willl be time consuming. E.g yesterday afternoon I talked to a friend about how much I regretted not buying a property in Cambridge a few years ago. I then ordered some tile samples on-line. As I was paying I saw that the company's business address was Jesus Lane in Cambridge - where I used to live. I then picked up a novel I had begun at Christmas but not looked at since the beginning of March when my 28 year old nephew tragically had a cardiac arrest in the gym and died. The novel is about a group of people who are staying at a hotel - i.e. not a 'medical' story. As I picked it up I thought 'the last time I read this J. (my nephew) was alive and well . I started to cry and said out loud ' J. why did you die ? I looked down where the book had fallen open - much further on than I had read. The first thing I saw In the middle of the page, on a separate line from the previous diaogue, were the words 'cardiac arrest'. Underneath were the words 'He was not ready to die'. I continued to read bits of the novel - dipping in and out - and as I came to a paragraph about the diary of a German fighter pilot the radio - which i had on in the background - began a programme of excerpts from the diaries of British and German fighter pilots . And that's just one afternoon's worth. The day before I was introduced to a neighbour four doors down from my house - which i moved into 3 months ago, He is Spanish, My late nephew lived in Spain. I showed the neighbour a photo of the clifftop where my nephew's ashes are scattered. My neighbour was astonished -it turned out that he grew up in the village where my nephew lived and spent his childhood playing on the cliffs and knew and loved the exact spot where my nephew's ashes were scattered. (I should add that he is the only Spanish person I have met in thirty years living in this very un-diverse small town, Because I am so used to such coincidences I'm not sure how unusual these sort of synchronicities are. However I have experienced other coincidences which even I have been startled by. I could fill a small encyclopaedia but will limit my self to just a few and will post each separately. But one more here- My parents are both dead - my mother as a result of a catastrophic brain haemorrhage and my father from heart failure after a massive heart attack . My mother's brain haemorrhage occured on my 17th birthday - 15 August 1973. My father remained in excellent health until his heart attack - on my 50th birthday 15 August 2006. Neither parent had any previous CVAs and my birthdays never involved any strenuous or stressfull activities! I will post separately the Hakka hat coincidence, the triple tea dance coincidence, the plane crash coincidence . . . .
