Two unconnected French friends of mine meet on Dover to Calais ferry

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Some years ago, I was being visited by a friend ( Patrick) from
Paris. During his visit, I received a postcard from another French friend( Jean-Pierre, from Grenoble) who was at the time on a walking holiday in Scotland.
I was gobsmacked to hear later from Patrick that, on his return trip on the Dover-Calais ferry, he had sat next to another chap and started up a conversation. The chap was also French, and it turned out they both had a friend in Cambidge. Yes, it was Jean-Pierre.....
