understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

The-dansants ?? In 1974 I was working in London in my gap year. One evening while walking past the Aldwych Hotel to Charing Cross I was approached by a young sandy-haired man with a clip board, He said he worked for one of the independent TV companies and was on the look out for 'interesting looking people' to invite to one of the regular tea- dances they held. He told me he wanted me to go to the next one and where and when it was but I didn't listen as I didn't believe him and even if he was genuine I had no intention of going to a 'tea-dance' for 'interesting people'. I went off to University in Aberystwyth and then got a job working for a small independent publisher in Cambridge. One afternoon In 1979 I decided that we had so much outgoing post I would, very unusually, take it myself to the Post Office in Trinity street - literally a few steps round the corner from All Saints passage where I worked. As I turned into Trinity Street the same sandy haired young man who had approached me in London, suddenly appeared in front of me with the same spiel about being on the look out for 'interesting looking people' for a the dansant' and suggested I meet him later to' discuss' it. This time he specified the ITV company he worked for (I think it was Anglia )and said they were in Cambridge shooting on the Backs for a life of the Romantic poets.' When I got back to the office, very shaken, and told my colleagues what had happened they were stunned and rang Anglia who confirmed they were not filming any thing on the Backs, had no presence in Cambridge and had never heard of the 'interesting people's the dansants'. Move on 18 months and, now engaged, one Friday evening I was walking down Vauxhall Bridge Road to my fiancé’s flat in Vincent Square. Suddenly up pops - you've guessed - THE SAME MAN with the same story! This time I just laughed and walked past . I should add that on each occasion I was wearing very ordinary clothes and there was nothing unusual or noticeably 'interesting' about my appearance. Had I met him three times in the same area of London it would have been remarkable but add in the geography and the time scale and it becomes, to me at any rate, pretty inexplicable. I sometimes wonder if I was destined to be murdered by him but kept confounding fate!
