understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

A few months ago, I found a ring on the floor of a fast-food restaurant and decided to keep it instead of returning it because it looked cheap - it had a gap in the back (broken circle) the way many plastic rings do. I guessed a little girl must have dropped it and the family wound't bother to look for a cheap piece of jewelry, and something told me to keep it. I put it in my coat pocket and forgot about it. A month later, I started reading about the Wiccan religion - mostly in curiosity. I liked the idea of a "high priestess" - a card in the Tarot card deck that represents a link to the subconscious mind. She represents femininity, inspiration, and higher knowledge. I related to this symbolic card because I had just recently begun reading and thinking about spirituality, challenging different perspectives with my philosophical one. A few hours after I had learned about the high priestess, my sister said she found a ring on the floor and thought it was mine. She returned to me the ring I had picked up about a month ago. My mom, noticing the commotion, examined the ring and told us that it was pure silver (it had S925 engraved on the side, so small I didn't notice it before). This time, I noticed the ring has a triple moon design on it, the center moon being a gemstone. Something compelled me to search up the symbol. The triple moon turned out to be a Wiccan symbol, often found on crowns or other head-pieces worn by the High Priestess. I love wearing the ring and haven't taken it off since because it reminds me of the remarkable coincidences that happen in everyday life.
