STRANGE MEDICAL COINCIDENCE

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

One of my aunts runs a Rare Breeds farm in Gloucestershire. Some years ago she was gored by one of her long horn cattle for no obvious reason (nothing like this had happened before) and suffered serious abdominal injuries. She was air lifted to hospital where the surgeon who treated her was Spanish and announced that he knew what to do, because he worked in Seville and often treated Bull Fighters who's been gored. The chances of finding a Spanish Bull Fight surgeon in a small UK hospital, for just such an injury must be very small. (She recover but had to take things easy for some years).
