understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

My boss and I were supposed to drive around to a bunch of schools in North Philly, an area that I don't frequent. I had taken the subway there and my boss was supposed to pick me up so we could drive around to these schools. She called me and as we were on the phone, she got in an accident. She was fine but told me she couldn't drive and I would have to visit the schools alone. Fine, but I wasn't sure how to do that since I had no transportation. I figured out that I could take a bus to the first school, so I was waiting at the bus stop when at that very moment I saw a friend drive by in her car on her way to med school. Literally the only person I know in the world who would have reason to be in that area AND she had a car! I called her, told her I just saw her drive by, and asked if I could borrow her car for the day. Dropped her off at med school, got to all of the schools I needed to visit, and got the car back just after her classes ended so I could buy her a drink to say thanks! But mostly, I was thanking the universe!
