understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

On a skiing trip to the French Alps a couple of years ago, a conversation developed over coffee about rugby - two of our group had played in the first XI for our school team, some 30 years ago. One had played at hooker, the other had played prop. This prompted me to ask - 'who was the third player in that front row?' The answer came back - it was Jason. At that precise moment (exactly), as if by magic, the aforementioned Jason walked onto the terrace of the cafe at which we were having coffee, half-way down a blue run down to the ski resort we were staying at. Jaws dropped. Gasps of incredulity. The chances of someone of similar background, being at a French ski resort during February are perhaps not that slim. But the chances of this person appearing precisely at moment they have been brought up in conversation seems vanishingly small.
