Pictures at an exhibition

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I grew up in Pembrokeshire, west Wales. In 1986 my 11th birthday treat was a day trip to Cardiff with my family to see the ‘Dinosaurs from China’ exhibition at the museum. This was quite a big deal and out of the ordinary, as back then the journey would normally take about 3.5 hours each way, so a fair undertaking. We took a lot of photos as we went round the exhibition, including one of me next to one of the amazing skeletons. In 1988 I went on a family holiday to Greece and made friends with a girl called Emma who was from the Valleys and who I had never seen before nor since. Some time later while sorting through some photos I came across the picture from the exhibition; in the background were Emma and her parents.
