understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

A few years back my mother's stepsister and her husband were on holiday in America. They got talking to an American couple who recognised their English accents. The American couple mentioned that they had lived in England about 20 years before for a few years in a small place near Pembury in Kent. My 'aunt' said she knew Pembury as they lived in Tonbridge just a short drive away. They got talking some more and the American couple said that their daughter Vicky had gone to school in England and that her best friend was XXX, to which my aunt said, that's my niece. The funny thing is I wouldn't have said that I was Vicky's best friend whilst she was at my school although we were good friends.
