understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I was on a train in Russia and the train conductor called me by my grandmother’s original maiden name (“O—-“ a Russian last name which her father had changed to “K—-“ upon immigrating to Greece to better assimilate). It is not a common last name (though it is a famous one, as it belongs to a noble family) and bears no resemblance to my actual last name — “S—-.”
