understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In the 80s I was looking after a little boy called Tom in London. I took him with me to the American Embassy to get a working visa. Two New Zealander girls were behind us and they talked to Tom while I went up to the desk. A few weeks later I was working in New York, and my employer's friend came to tea with her little girl and their new nanny, one of the New Zealanders.
