The N Word

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Some time ago I had a facebook conversation about offense and the N-word and in what contexts it be deemed offensive. Yesterday I looked back at the copy I had kept of the conversation, and today someone posted a picture of a 'redkneck' with a shirt on with an arrow pointing at his pal which said 'my nigga' and upon his mate's shirt was a reciprocal arrow pointing back saying 'my redkneck' - I was posting asking whether two wrongs don't make a right,or whether the two guys were overcoming their prejudice. At that time I was watching WOLF OF WALLSTREET - Leonardo's mate at that very moment said 'You just called the captain the N-word'.....coincidental enough, but the strand that the posting of the two guys in shirts came from was called 'Freaky Stuff'. Freaky indeed.
