understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Hi david, my boyfriend read the article in the Daily Mail and asked me to respond. About 2 years ago i was working at the NEC at a show as the line of work i do is promotions, the show was a 4 day event but i was only to work the first 2 days and the go onto the IDH show in London however events occured and i ended up doing the full 4 days. On the evening of the last day i caught my train from Birmingham to London ready to work on the show the following day. All the way down i was on my phone moaning about the length of time i would be away and probably too the annoyance of the passengers on the train. When we pulled into the station i suddenly saw a young man sat in the seats in front of me only as a side profile and thought ooh he looks cute i wish i'd sat next to him. As he stood up and turned round i thought wow hes really nice and caught myself smilingat him too which he smiled back. As we got off the train we both walked side by side both not saying anything too each other but all the while i was thinking go on say something. When we both finally reached the point where we parted ways he strolled on ahead and i was left thinking damn it a chance missed there, i also remember thinking im sure he is something to do with the army and then he was gone. Roll forward a week or so later and i was in Birmingham trying to make my way through some nightmare traffic on route to meet father who's birthday it was actually (April 1st) to be precise, we usually meet in a little country pub at the back of beyond but we love it. When i finally arrived which was about an hour and a half late father was busy chatting to a young man in the pub which was quite wierd as my father is not a really social person, but i thought well let him carry on it gets me off the hook for being late and actually the young man was nice looking. After about an hour of us all chatting me introducing myself and father busy telling tales to this cute guy of his life as an artist the conversation suddenly turned to me and the young man who's name by the way was Chris asked me what i did for a living etc etc and so i told him the type i work i do and some of my recent contracts. After about 5 minutes he said were you not on a train a week last sunday complaining about not wanting to go and work at a show and i said yes how did you no? He then replied because i was the guy who was sat in front of you. I think if you could have seen the shocked look on my face what a picture, i remember the hairs sticking up on the back of my neck. Chris also said how annoying i was and all he was thinking was can someone shut that girl up please at which we both laughed. The thing that was even wierder he shares the first name as my fathers and Chris's middle name is the same as my fathers father, his mother and father live on the same road as my father and he has something to do wih the army. Well ever since then we have never been apart, we live together now and are planning to get married. I often think to myself what if i had ony done 2 days of the first show would we have ever met, but thank goodness we did!
