understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

One day a Serbian-Roma musician friend of mine posted a photo on my Facebook timeline. I met him in Serbia but he was living in Australia at that time. A few minutes later, a friend from India who I met in Manchester commented that he had met my Serbian friend on the streets in Sydney the day before! He spotted a musician walking slowly in the pouring rain and was compelled to cross the road and talk to him. Maybe he subconsciously recognised him from my own Facebook page or maybe it's a complete coincidence. What's weird is that I have lots of stories like this - bumping into friends at poignant times or having random connections with people that often cross continents. I sometimes have multiple coincidences with one person and I wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something!
