Mountain meeting

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

This is one of many. I drove 150 miles with friends and was walking on top of a mountain in the Peaks, and coming towards me was one of my neighbours !

I moved from Northampton to Cambridge many years ago. While there, I made contact with a packaging manufacturer near Cambridge to buy boxes. In conversation with the sales woman, we established that we both came from Northampton and that she had lived next door to my father's close work colleague.

A young woman came and sat next to me. I noticed she was reading an English book, so struck up conversation, 'why are you studying?', 'to go to the UK', she replied. 'Where ?, 'Cambridge', she replied. 'Oh, I used to live there. Which school?', 'xxxx school' 'Really?', I replied. The manager is my friend !
