understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I live in the States and went to Australia on a business/holiday trip. On the last day of the trip I needed to exchange my Australian currency back to US dollars. Instead of paying the expensive exchange fee, I decided to just spend the money on souvenirs. As my favorite type of shopping is in thrift stores, I headed to one. While I picked out t-shirts, I noticed a lady chatting at length with the cashier. When I went to pay for my finds, she stepped aside, but continued her conversation. As soon as I spoke she broke in and asked "Are you an American?" I replied I was and she asked where I was from. Because the town I grew up in was very small, I instead mentioned the state and said I was from a small town there. She asked "Do you know Small City?" I was surprised and said "Yes, Small City is the biggest city near my small hometown, Small Town." She then said "Do you know Lake Shore Boat Dock?" surprising me again. I said "Yes! Lake Shore Boat Dock is 6 miles from the house where I grew up. Both of my brothers worked there as teens and my older sister dated one of the workers. She often took me there when visiting her boyfriend and I have fond memories of being kept busy feeding the ducks at the dock." She said she had married the into the family that owned the boat dock and spent alot of time there. During this exchange I couldn't help staring at her hat. She had a ball cap emblazoned with the name of the college in the city I was living in (as I had moved out of the small town) and which was two miles from my current home. She noticed the stare and pulled of her cap to look at it. I explained that we had yet another coincidence since I lived right next to the university. She explained one more coincidence: she said the cap was a "collectable" that she never wore, but his morning she found that her dog had chewed up her favorite cap and this university cap was the only one within reach as she rushed out the door!
