understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

About fifteen years ago I lived in Tollesbury, Essex, and worked in an office in South Hanningfield, Essex. One of my office colleagues lived in Canvey Island, Essex, and was called for jury service on a case at Southend, Essex. After his first day the case was deferred and he returned to the office for a day. unable of course to disclose any details of the case. I was friendly with an elderly lady in Tollesbury with whom I played scrabble once a week. On the evening of the above court case my friend asked whether I would mind us playing with another friend of hers. I agreed and had a very enjoyable evening with the judge who was hearing that very case, and who had no restriction about discussing details. Naturally I never disclosed my contact with either party but my office colleague was mystified by my knowledge of the case.
