understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
On holiday in Gran Canaria, in a restaurant I told my partner about a surprise I had planned for her father's imminent 80th birthday. I said that just before leaving Ireland two days earlier I had sent an e-mail to an Irish newsreader whom her father liked and had asked her for an autographed photograph.
Literally within seconds of me telling her, the newsreader walked into the restaurant......
