understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Back around 2002 I worked as a creative director for a photography company in South London... One morning whilst at work, I suddenly had a strong feeling to check my bank account.....after about half an hour I still had the feeling so decided to log in to my online bank account, something I very rarely did and never had done at work... When I logged in, I discovered to my shock that £1000 had gone from my account the very same morning. I rang my bank immediately and informed them of the missing money. They told me that 30minutes to an hour before, I had purchase a dress for £600 and Television for £400. Very strange I thought... I told them that there was no way it was me and they immediately stopped my card and told me not to worry too much as I was insured and would receive the money back. That put me at ease somewhat but it still made my question how I could receive such gut feelings around the very moment my card was being used... After thinking about things I remembered that a few days previous, perhaps a week, I had gone to a restaurant in Clapham with a friend.... I paid with my card and remember the waiter taking my card away out back to take my payment....I felt uncomfortable at the time but didn't think anymore about it... This was the only restaurant I had been to in recent weeks and the only time I had paid for anything where my bank card was taken away from my sight.....so I was fairly certain this is where my card had been cloned to initiate the future fraud. Around 3 days after my account had been used fraudulently, I was asked to attend a work meeting at a sister studio in London to meet with other photographers who held my position in other branches all around London.... When I arrived for the meeting I met around 12 photographers who held my job at the other branches... I sat next to a chap I had never met but who I got on with and during the break we talked in some length and discovered we both lived in Clapham and should meet up for a drink.....everything was going great until I asked him where he lived in Clapham. He told me that he lived above the same restaurant where I suspected my card had been cloned! I told him my surprise and went on to give him the brief details of what had happened to me. He suddenly went as white as a sheet and pretty much cut off talking with me and went to another group of people and didn't talk to me again for the rest of the afternoon... at the time I felt that perhaps I'd indulged him with too much of my personal event.... Either way it felt odd. At the end of the day as I was leaving the studio I told him it was nice to meet him and we should go for the drink sometime.... He pretty much ignored me and continued talking with others. I had a Vespa scooter at the time and rode home that night feeling very strange about what had happened... The next day I decided to phone my bank to find out if they knew where the items had been purchased from..... They did actually know and told me the TV had been bought from a a large electrical company which was amazingly straight opposite the studio I had visited for the meeting and where the chap I had been talking with worked! The dress had been bought from a shop close to a station between where he worked and clapham..... It was at this point where I felt sure that the same chap was probably friends with the staff in the restaurant as they probably also lived above the restaurant...I felt startled by the whole event....but sure they must be working as a fraud syndicate... I rang the police and told an officer the details... he also said he believed me and equally felt startled by the occurrences...he asked me what I would like to do to proceed and I decided that the chap I had met was a nice person and I felt he had been caught up with the wrong crowd... I told the Policeman that I wouldn't pursue anything as I got the money back from the card company and that I think that the look on the chaps face was enough to make him realise to never do such things again..I recall telling the officer the name of the restaurant to follow things up there but never heard anything more. I did try to call the chap at his studio and left work questions for him with his colleagues and he never returned my calls. This whole event has never left me and made me question a lot of things... I have had quite a number of strange occurrences since but this is one that stands out.
