understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

Just listened to a BBC radio4 programme about coincidences where they interviewed you. So, wanted to ask the probability of this: I have three sisters and two brothers. My birthday is 12 th June 1967, Ranchi, India, but I moved to England with my parents and five siblings in 1976.My eldest sister who was married with a 9 month old daughter stayed on in India. My niece, the youngest ( of two) daughters of my eldest sister was born on 12 th June 1980 in Ranchi, India. Then the eldest child of my youngest brother was born on 12th June 2000 in London, England Then my eldest brothers son was also born on 12th June about five years later in San Diego as my brother had moved to live there. So , out of 11 nephews and nieces from my 4 siblings who have children , three share my birthday ! Would be good to know the probability of this happening. Prita Jha
