EMPTY SKYE

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In the late 1970's my wife Anne and I were on a touring holiday in Scotland and quite by chance decided to 'speed rusty boat' across to Skye, driving along out in the middle of nowhere we were, quite genuinely, discussing how different to be somewhere so empty and deserted when a car appeared in the distance behind us, it rapidly overtook us then screeched to a halt, it was a friend keith from Leeds who we hadn't seen for some time, he had recognised our car.
