Eminent statisticians, 1924

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

This coincidence relates to two eminent statisticians (Peter Armitage and David Cox) who were born on the same day - 15th July 1924. Both were educated at Cambridge, both received British honours (CBE and Knighthood) and both were Presidents of the RSS (1982-84 and 1980-1982). Looking at statisticians born near that date, I found this: Presidents RSS/IMS Educated J Durbin - 30.06.1923 – 23.06.2012 1986-87 Cambridge DV Lindley - 25.07.1923 – 14.12.2013 Cambridge P Armitage, DR Cox - 15.07.1924 – 1982-84, 1980-82 Cambridge I Olkin - 23.07.1924 – 28.04.2016 1984 Columbia P Meier - 24.07.1924 – 07.08.2011 1986 Princeton JA Nelder - 08.10.1924 – 07.08.2010 1985-86 Cambridge MH Quenouille 09.10.1924 – 12.12.1973 Cambridge All of them lived at least 85 years but Quenouille who died in an accident, and apart from Olkin and Meier they were born in England and educated at Cambridge.
