understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
Some years ago whilst hanging out the laundry fresh from the washing machine, I found that one of the buttons of one shirt was fastened. 'So you forget to undo the button when you took the shirt off' I hear you cry. Not so, because the button was fastened into the WRONG button hole (and in any case I'm a bit obsessive about always undoing all buttons whenever I take off any clothing).
So the button must have become fastened as a result of the random movements created by the action of the washing machine.
