understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
In October 1956 following 3 years in New York City I was having a final holiday in the USA, spent mostly in the far South West. One evening in Yosemite National Park I dined in the restaurent, sitting up at the counter; next to me was an American Dentist who had been working in British India and had recently retired, found temporary accomodation in London and was now looking for the perfect retirement location in America. His favourite so far was Reno, Nevada.
I continued on my travels for two more weeks and in early December set sail for home from New York on the Cunard Freight Liner 'Media'; as there were not many passengers at this time of year we all dined at an Oficer's table, on my right was the Purser and on his right was the - American Dentist !
