Bumping into a friend in a large city
As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
I think this is the only coincidence that's stuck with me - it was about ten years ago, and I was in London for the day, planning to do a few things before meeting up with a friend of mine in the evening to go to a gig. It turned out that my friend had also headed into London a few hours early, and we bumped into each other on (I think) Oxford Street - I saw her crossing the road and called out. This wasn't near any shops or venues that both of us were interested in, we were both just passing through the city and happened to cross paths.
(Bit concerned that by publishing all the stories visibly at the bottom of this page, you're discouraging people from reporting mundane coincidences - I nearly stopped and deleted this one, after reading the more epic coincidences below.)
