understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia in the 1990s with a group of girls who all love (LOVED) the Backstreet Boys. Of course, the Backstreet Boys never toured the Middle East and it wasn't until our first year of college that we got to see them live in Canada. At that time, I was studying in Lebanon and my friends were studying in Montreal. They implored that my friend and I fly to Montreal to visit them and attend the concert as a reunion and nostalgia fest. My friends in Montreal purchased their tickets months before we did, so we were absolutely stunned when we arrived at the concert venue and realized that out of the 15,000 seats available, somehow the six of us had seats together! 4 in one row, 2 directly in front of those 4 with a direct view of the stage. It was hard not to feel like the gods had smiled on us, our 20+ year friendship, and our love for the Backstreet Boys and brought us full circle together!
