understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

In the summer of 2018, I was on my morning walk along Dallas Road in Victoria, BC and approaching Cook Street a few blocks up ahead when I see a coin lying on the old dark cement sidewalk. I pick it up. It is a Loonie - a Canadian 1-dollar coin. I continue to walk and almost immediately I come upon another coin - this time it is a Toonie -a Canadian 2-dollar coin. Looking up ahead a little further I see two more coins; another Loonie and another Toonie. 4 coins which sum to 6 Canadian dollars. It stopped me in my tracks. I was so mystified that I was barely struck by this very meaningful coincidence. It immediately reminded me of C.G. Jung's definition of Synchronicity as being an acausal connecting principle. I had been struggling for years to understand a Jungian analyst’s interpretation of the alchemical axiom of Maria Prophetissa which says, "Out of the One comes Two, out of Two comes Three, and from the Third comes the One as the Fourth. Like this the Two become One." According to the author of "Return of the World Soul; Wolfgang Pauli, C.G. Jung and the Challenge of Psychophysical Reality (2011)" he claims that "the One as the Fourth is really the Sixth" using a complicated argument based on the quality of numbers (a feminine principle aspect) and not just the quantity of numbers (a masculine principle aspect). As I am in my elder years (pushing 80) I could not follow his logic. The synchronicity did the rest. It then came to me in an inner vision while meditating how to arrive at the same conclusion using colors for the feminine aspect of the quality of numbers. It was simply marvelous and I do not say that lightly for I have a PhD in theoretical physics and aerodynamics so I am rather inclined to listen to my Logos ego higher Self not my Eros ego higher Self. Helps from "The Dark Places of Wisdom" it seems.
