understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

This happened in the early nineties of last century. I am Portuguese from Lisbon. I was a regular visitor to London. This time I was with my wife and teenage daugther for a consultation with an otorrinologist. We went for lunch at Portobello Road. We saw a nice corner restaurant and decided for it. I jokingly said to my daughter these exact words: in a few minutes Annie Lennox, the Eurythmics lead singer, will come into the restaurant through that door. It thought that it would be a totally improbable occurence but it was a nice thought as my daugther was a fan and this looked like a place artists would use. A few minutes later Annie Lennox enters the restaurant with a friend and a child. We were petrified. After the shock my daughter asked Lennox for an autograph. She oviously lived nearby and must have been a regular at the restaurant but I didn't know about it.
