Advance meeting

As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.

understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.

One day I was travelling from Lewisham in SE London to South Ealing in W London to visit a friend. I changed from the Northern Line on to the Piccadilly Line at Leicester Square Station. As I got on the Piccadilly Line train I noticed that the carriage was full, apart from two empty seats next to each other in the middle of the train. I approached the nearest seat from my end of the carriage; meanwhile, someone else sat in the other seat. The other person was the person I was on my way to visit.

Returning home from a holiday in Turkey, for some reason I was flying on a different flight to the rest of my party. I was going to end up at Gatwick Airport at midnight and wasn't sure how I was going to get home to Lee in SE London from there. I was put in a taxi transfer from the resort with a couple on a different package who I didn't know. As we got talking, I discovered that they lived about half a mile from me and had a hire car waiting for them at Gatwick. They kindly dropped me off at my door.
