understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.

I met my boyfriend at the bar next door, a few months after moving to New York - he was a bartender there and had been for 5 years. The first time he came over to my apartment, it was late at night and he slept over. In the morning as he was getting ready to leave, he gathered up the courage to ask, "Is this 3155 Main Street, Apartment 2?" "Yes...why?" I said, thinking he was just trying to figure out where he was in relation to where he had to get. "OK please don't think this is creepy or weird, but I used to live here, 12 years ago. This was my bedroom," he said. He had moved a few times since then and lived in Times Square at that point. Yes, he worked next door, but he hadn't gotten that job until a few years after he moved out of the area. But 12 years previously, he had lived in the exact apartment, the exact bedroom that I moved into - my first New York apartment. He just moved back in and we live there together now.

Of all the apartments in all of New York City that I could have moved into, that he could have lived in, we both chose this one 12 years apart, under different owners, me after a few renovations and many improvements, or so I hear. Especially with the New York apartment market being what it is - it feels like an strong coincidence that THIS apartment was available at THIS time and that I came across the listing online and that it was the second apartment my roommate and I saw after not liking the first, and that I needed to move to NY in February, which is when it happened to be listed as open. I didn't believe him at first, but then I met his former roommate who also lived there - they stories and pictures. But the clincher was when I received in the mail an advertisement for a Disney Cruise addressed to his former roommate. They were still sending him mail there 10 years after he had moved out.
