January 23, 2008
As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
All were in attendance: Mike, Owen, David, Hauke, Arciris
Priority areas right now are
- Website
- Presentation on Saturday with 30 youth, 13 years old
Will launch the website mid-May.
Won't get an external designer as yet, will wait for input from public to have more to work with. Quite happy with structure of website, superficial look may need a few tweaks.
Need a policy in regards to putting up empty pages "stubs". We can tag stubs so that others know what to review
When we look at developing personas, this will further website development. Personas might include: Journalist, interested consumer/lay person, bright school person, government policy worker/communicator, other educators (teachers/lecturers)
The menu might be an area where we point specific personas to an area that would be of use to them. We can create tags for these personas with names/pictures.
Ben Goldacre will be coming in and DS to look at getting him in earlier than mid-March.
DS and Mike to look at hiring an editor for the website. DS to concentrate on getting the statistics/maths content up on the website, without concerns about editing/readability.
Owen and Mike to investigate the blog aspect of the website to get it up soon. Discussed various formats; a lead in article/feature, with the rest hidden or linked in along with people's blog comments.
Owen and Mike to look into getting an account with an image library, to gather images for the website as needed.
Spoke about Wikipedia editing and role the Winton program will play in that in the future. Too much right now to take a big role on Wikipedia to edit but will be useful to have a presence soon.
Meeting next Wednesday, at 2pm.
