Using Workflow
As of the 23rd May 2022 this website is archived and will receive no further updates.
understandinguncertainty.org was produced by the Winton programme for the public understanding of risk based in the Statistical Laboratory in the University of Cambridge. The aim was to help improve the way that uncertainty and risk are discussed in society, and show how probability and statistics can be both useful and entertaining.
Many of the animations were produced using Flash and will no longer work.
Managing Workflow
By Workflow we mean the features of the site that track the status and hence the visibility of an item from initial creation to publication.
As editors and authors, we can change this status by clicking on the Workflow tab that appears whenever we view a page. There is an identical Workflow subsection inside the Edit page. Every page is in one of the following states:
- Under Construction - i.e. it's being written.
- Under Review - the author has finished and wants the page reviewed.
- Ready - the item is complete and ready for publication. It needs no further review.
- Public - the item is visible to the general public.
- Internal - the item is an internal page.
Authors, Editors and Admins can view, edit, and change the workflow status of all items
When we release, the general public will only see Public items.
Reviewers will be able to see items in the Under Review, Ready, and Public states.
You can check what reviewers see by logging in as 'reviewer' with the undunc spiral password.
There is a separate check box labelled 'Published' at the end of the edit form under 'Publishing Options'. This should normally be checked, as without it, the item will not appear in any menus or books and can only be accessed through the Content list. Uncheck it only if you want to withdraw a page from the site without completely deleting it. If this box is unchecked, the background of the page will appear pink as a warning.
How Workflow Visibility affects Links
It's likely that most of our public content will be in a Drupal Book. Fortunately, the book navigation menus and links are aware of page visibility as determined by workflow - so if a book page is Under Construction, and you are not an author, you won't see it.
Hyperlinks that you insert in a page, and links appearing in other menus will appear even if the page they link to is not public. Books should therefore be published as a whole so we do not present links to 'Access Denied' pages to the general public.
