Well I Never!

Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University wants to know about your coincidences!

Working abroad

I was working in Oman and taking a leisurely day on the deserted beautiful beach. I went swimming. There was only one other person in the water. We started talking and it turned out that he had been brought up in the same small Essex seaside village where my mother lives and his parents ran her local fish and chip shop.

Identical mileage readings at same location

On 8 Jan 12, I was driving my partners car (a Y Reg Rover 25) southbound on the M5 as we passed Michael Wood Services when her odometer reached 55,555 miles (five fives). This is not a route we drive often. Only two days later I was driving my own car (a 54 Reg Honda Civic) southbound on the M5 when its mileage hit 55,555 miles at the same location.

Wrong Number

When I was a teenager, a group of us went to Liskeard in Cornwall for our first holiday together without our parents. Whilst out visiting the local beauty spots, we walked beside a public telephone box and could hear the phone was ringing. First of all we just laughed and ignored it but on passing, I felt the sudden urge to go back and answer it. I picked up the phone and somebody said "Is that you Carol"? Well I was stunned but I answered yes.

Chance meeting in North Yorkshire

In winter 1998 my boyfriend and I were invited to a 30th birthday weekend in North Yorkshire. Around 25 people were accomodated in a secluded camping barn. On the first night we all walked up a dirt track and along an unlit road to the nearest pub. We were living in Birmingham at the time. Also in 1998 my brother began his undergraduate studies in Newcastle. Although we were close we had not been in touch with other for a couple of months. It was before we had mobile phones and we were lazy with letters. Back to the pub in North Yorkshire. We were having a great time.

birthday coincidence

My son, Jacob, had a sister born on his birthday, 27th September, he married a lady whose sister was born on the same date, one year later, 16th January, and they subsequently had two sons with the same birthday, 7th September. I would love to know what are the chances of this happening!

Twin sister

Whilst visiting relatives in the North of England (I was living in Oxford at the time) we decided to have a day out in Newcastle. On arrival the first thing we did was head for a coffee shop, where I noticed a lady I worked with in Oxford, I went over and said "Hello fancy seeing you here are you visiting too" she looked at me blankly, then smiled and said I think you are getting me mixed up with my twin sister - she lives in Oxford.

Travel conicidence

This happened 30 years ago. My sister and I were travelling back from France on the boat train during our summer holidays. We shared a carriage, on the train, with a young couple. We chatted. When I returned to college, in the September, the woman was not only at the same college as me but was in the same halls as I had been previously and in my old room! I did talk to her about it but she didn't remember my sister or I. When we talked about meeting on the train, this is when I realised she was in my old room.We had not talked about college or Sheffield where we were at college.

CHANCE MEETING

Met a couple travelling on motorail to Bolognia three weeks later driving on a remote B road in the Voges mountains in France needed to stop we spotted a couple walking up the road towards us--that's right the couple from the train we made many small changes in route and timing over the three weeks remarkable chance. regards
